Focus Jam² Factory Plus E-Bike
Based on the superb Jam trail bike, the new Focus Jam² E-bike feels and rides very similar to your normal manual powered trail bike. This means you can tackle the same trails with a familiar confident feel, yet ride them twice as many times due to the superb Shimano E8000 Steps motor!
Shimano’s all new E8000 motorized drivetrain has been employed to offer a natural assistance to the rider, keeping the bike smooth and composed on technical parts of trail. The Shimano system is mounted differently to other motors, keeping weight low and central whilst still allowing the chainstays to be made as short as possible to keep the bike feeling lively and fun. Focus have developed a battery in house for the Shimano system, which is smaller and lighter than other brands batteries whilst still providing enough power for your regular 2-3 hour rides. It is also the only custom battery approved by Shimano.
Shimano’s power system has 4 modes for you to choose from, including Walk Mode, ECO mode, Trail mode and Boost mode:
Walk Mode: This mode is designed to help the rider deal with the added weight of an E-bike when they get to sections where they may feel they need to walk or even just for manoeuvring the bike around
Eco Mode: Eco mode offers a little assistance on flatter sections of trail, or even for parts where you need to save the battery power for more demanding sections.
Trail Mode: This is the mode used most of the time on the Focus and is what really sets Shimano’s system apart from the rest. Trail mode offers the most natural assistance available on any e-bike. Shimano achieved this by using a power meter to assist the rider by matching what they are putting in with the electric assistance. This makes more technical parts of trail much more manageable as the power delivery is much easier to judge and control as it works directly off the rider input. Trail mode offers up to as much power as boost mode however that depends on the riders’ power input. This mode offers the feeling of a normal mountain bike ride, yet with the legs of an Olympic Champion.
Boost Mode: Boost mode most certainly lives up to its name, giving maximum power all in one hit to offer that feeling of being pushed along the trail. This feels more like other E-bike power systems with a real boost-like sensation when you apply some power through the pedals.
Focus have employed the FOLD suspension linkage much like the one on the standard manual trail bike which has received a lot of praise in recent reviews. The FOLD linkage allows a supple feel at the beginning of the stroke to offer grip and compliance, whilst it still offers oceans of support and ramps up to take the big hits well when needed.
With the Jam2 weighing much less than other E-bikes, and offering a supple yet supportive suspension linkage, this bike out handles many of the E-bikes on the market, offering a much smoother transition from your regular trail bike.
With the Factory build kit, the Jam² makes the most of its modern angles and 140mm of rear travel with a new Rockshox Deluxe rear shock, and a burly Rockshox Yari 150mm front fork. Drivetrain is taken care of by Sram’s NX 1x11 shifter and rear mech, whilst the powerful Magura MT5 brakes are sure to keep you in check when things get a bit rowdy.
